Poker is a game of card-hands played with money (or chips representing it) where players make decisions on the basis of probability and psychology. The objective is to win a pot by having the best hand when all the cards are revealed. Although a large amount of chance is involved in the outcome of any particular hand, the long-run expectations of players are determined by their actions chosen on the basis of probability and game theory.<\/p>\n
A game of poker is usually played with 6 or 8 players. Each player is dealt 2 hole cards and the betting begins. A round of betting is followed by the dealing of another 3 cards to the table, called the flop. Once this happens, there is another round of betting and the player with the best 5 card hand wins the pot.<\/p>\n
In poker, players can also swap their cards out for new ones during or after the betting rounds. The process is called “discarding” or “mucking”.<\/p>\n
Sometimes a player will try to be tricky and deceive opponents, even though this can be counterproductive. For instance, he may raise preflop with Kings, and then check a flop with a set in order to tempt his opponent into bluffing with a junk hand. This trickery is very dangerous and should be avoided.<\/p>\n
Many players spend hours playing thoughtful, selectively aggressive poker, and then one flash of boneheadedness wipes them out.
